SPS has performed on-call structural repairs to infrastructure throughout MassDOT District 6, encompassing a wide range of tasks including concrete substructure repairs, steel structural repairs, and the installation of temporary shoring systems. Notable projects include substructure repairs to the median pier supporting Massachusetts Avenue over Interstate 90, the installation of a full-span shoring system beneath Route 16 over the MBTA Red Line in Cambridge, and structural steel repairs to the Granite Avenue Bridge over the Neponset River in Milton. This contract also includes a partial bridge replacement of the River Street Bridge over the Amtrak and Keolis rail lines in Hyde Park.
Key Challenges Overcome:
Hyde Park River St – Limited work hours. Typically, 2-3 hours of work each night due to restrictions when working over the railroad.
Interesting Facts / Figures
The River Street Bridge in Hyde Park was closed in May 2022. Since then, SPS has worked continuously to complete the necessary rehabilitation and reopen the bridge. The scope of work included inspection, design, repairs to the existing floor beams and trusses, replacement of all 53 stringer beams, all lateral bracing, all bridge bearings, and four floor beams. Additionally, the bridge deck was replaced, and a new wearing surface was installed. The bridge was successfully reopened to traffic in December 2024.
