District 6: Tunnel Systems Repair I-90 & 93

Project Overview:

• Tunnel system leak sealing, fireproofing and miscellaneous repairs (including painting) along Interstates 90 & 93 (Ted Williams and Thomas P O’Neil Tunnels) and Route 1A (Sumner and Callahan Tunnels)
• Installation of temporary fireproofing and cover at ITT expansion joints.
• Replacement of prestressed concrete wall panels.
• Repair of overhead concrete repairs.
• Replacement of existing drainage and access structures in the roadway.

 

Key Challenges Overcome:

Limited working hours. Typically, 4 hours of work each night due to traffic restrictions.

Limited access to specific locations through coordination with MassDOT and other Contractors in the area.

 

Interesting Facts / Figures

SPS New England is currently servicing general repairs to the tunnel with 4 separate crews performing a variety of long term repairs and maintenance to keep the tunnel in working condition for generations to come.
