I-93 Interchange over Commerce Way – 123

Project Overview:

SPS constructed double fly-over ramps on Interstate 93 over Commerce Way. 

The two new fly-over ramps consist of curved steel tub girders with a total length of over 2,750 feet that were erected over one of the region’s most heavily traveled highways.  

The project involved the construction of over 10,000 feet of interstate highway embankment; 22,000 square feet of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall; construction of new traffic signals; new sewer, water and drainage systems; wetland replication; and hazardous waste treatment and disposal.

Key Challenges Overcome:

Project was adjacent the Industri-Plex Superfund Site, a former chemical and glue manufacturing facility. EPA began cleanup in 1986 and the project had to contend with environmental and wetland concerns.

Interesting Facts / Figures

This project was one of three transforming the Industri-plex superfund site and building The Anderson Regional Transportation Center (ARTC). This was done in coordination with City of Woburn, MBTA, MHD and MassPort. ARTC is a multi-modal transit hub with commuter rail and bus service to Boston and points north. The highway interchange completed by SPS provides access to Commerce Way, a new road built to serve both the ARTC and the 245 acre Industri-plex redevelopment site. Seventy five of these acres are wetlands and will be protected as conservation land.

The Transportation Center was named for Jimmy Anderson, a thirteen year old boy who died from leukemia due to exposure from contaminants on the site prior to its cleanup.
