Project Overview

Project Overview
SPS successfully replaced the Mass Ave Bridge over Commonwealth Ave in Boston’s Back Bay using Rapid Bridge Replacement techniques, 30 hours ahead of schedule.

Services Performed
The existing deficient bridge was replaced using Accelerated Bridge Construction techniques, including precast abutment caps, bridge units, and rapid setting concrete.  The project also included full sidewalk, signal, and intersection replacement in a challenging downtown area.

Successful Results
The operation began on Thursday night, May 10th and was slated for completion by Tuesday morning, May 15th.  Due to excellent pre-planning and hard work by SPS crews, subcontractors, and the cooperation of MassDOT and the City of Boston, the bridge was reopened to the traveling public on Sunday night, May 13th, 30 hours ahead of schedule.

Subcontractors included:  JR Vinagro (Demolition); Atlantic Bridge & Engineering, Inc. (Structural Erection); and Brox Industries (Paving).
