Safety & Quality

SPS Makes Safety a Priority

“Mission to Zero” Safety Initiative

To continually improve our safety performance across the entire company, with specific focus on the goal of reducing the number of OSHA recordable incidents, SPS embarked on a new initiative in 2011 titled, “Mission to Zero.” This initiative serves to tangibly and powerfully reinforce to our team that ALL safety incidents, whether perceived as major or minor in nature, significantly impact the company, not only financially but personally, as we all have a vested interest in safety as a key pillar of our firm’s reputation and responsibility to team and the traveling public.

Since Mission To Zero was first introduced, our safety performance has improved in many areas across the company, and every member of our team takes pride in doing their part to maintain a safe workplace.

Safety & Quality Training

SPS Corporate Safety Manager Bill Timmons and his team consistently develop and administer a comprehensive training system and schedule for all SPS Employees, from the office to the field.

Some of these programs include:

  • Weekly Safety Briefings
  • On-site Safety Briefings
  • Tool-Box Talks

Celebrating Safety

One example of how SPS celebrates safety is during the Westminster project when it reached a milestone of 30,000 hours (19 straight months) without an OSHA recordable injury, and the entire SPS crew was recognized for their achievement in the company’s Mission to Zero Accidents objective. SPS New England Chairman and CEO Wayne Capolupo personally participated in the event, and shared with the team,

“This type of success doesn’t happen without involvement at all levels. Management, Field level supervision, the work force, our sub-contractors and the project owners all have to be on board in order to achieve this level of success.”

Crews enjoyed a great lunch, congratulatory handshakes, and the time needed for each employee to reflect on their contribution to this incredible accomplishment.

Total Quality Management (TQM) at SPS

SPS’s dedication to quality is evident in our continuously exploring and implementing systems and procedures that support Total Quality throughout our work sites. Each year, SPS conducted hundreds of site inspections that prompt discussions on the progress and quality of the work being performed. During these site visits, everyone in the field is encouraged to offer their ideas and constructive opinions regarding quality, cost awareness, and more.

SPS Senior VP of Total Quality Management Robert (Bob) Gemmell explains,

“Our Field Professionals provide years of experience and a knowledge-base that we respect, value and rely upon. We are proud of our management team and the efforts of our skilled tradesmen and women in providing quality workmanship.”
