New Bedford I-95 and Route 18 Interchange Project Update: November 2025

In late August, the DWW-SPS JV implemented our Phase 1 Temporary Traffic Control Plan on I-195 in New Bedford. The traffic control plan shifted the two lanes of traffic on I-195 Eastbound and Westbound into the right shoulder, and temporary barrier was installed to provide a work zone in the median. The DWW SPS JV has spent the last two months reconstructing the median on I-195 to create a crossover that moves the two lanes of I-195 Westbound Traffic onto I-195 Eastbound. This crossover is anticipated to be completed in November, and demolition of the I-195 Westbound bridge will follow.

Additionally, the I-195 Eastbound Ramps to Route 18 were closed to vehicular traffic on September 8th. Demolition I-195 Eastbound Off Ramp to Route 18 SB is underway and nearly complete at this time.

Newton-Weston I-90/I-95 Interchange – Rapid Replacement Weekends

This summer, the SPS-Walsh JV Team at the Newton/Weston I-90/I-95 Bridge Bundle project successfully completed a rapid bridge replacement of the Mass Pike (I-90) over MBTA Railroad.

The rapid bridge replacement was completed over two (2) separate 55-hour weekend shutdowns which included reducing I-90 traffic down to one (1) single lane each direction and full closure of the MBTA Railroad.

The scope of work included complete demolition of existing bridge superstructure, backwall concrete repairs, installation of precast bridge units, placement of rapid-setting concrete batched by on-site volumetric mobile mix trucks, milling, and paving of roadway approaches.

Both weekend bridge replacements were completed ahead of schedule with early opening of I-90 to all travel lanes prior to the 5AM Monday morning rush hour and no impacts to the return of Commuter Rail service.

This video by Savanna Media documents the process and the planning that went into the two rapid replacement weekends.
