SPS began the Belden G. Bly bridge replacement project in January 2021. The replacement bridge, a Dutch-style bascule bridge over the Saugus River, was opened to traffic on November 11, 2025, and the demolition of the temporary bridge soon followed. SPS is currently finishing the contract work, with completion anticipated before August 31, 2026. That means the total timeline from breaking ground, removing the old bridge, building a brand-new bridge, transferring traffic, demolishing the temporary bridge, and finishing all utilities and approach roadways will have taken 5.5 years in total.
