District 6 Maintenance Update: September 2025

SPS is milling and paving nightly with Brox Industries, Inc. in the central artery tunnel of Boston. The work window is typically 4 hours nightly and all of the milled Microsilica wearing surface is replaced with new pavement on a nightly basis. Seabrook-Hampton Bridge Replacement: September 2025

Seabrook-Hampton, NH Bridge Replacement Update: In collaboration with our partners — NH Department of Transportation, HDR< HUB Foundation Co., Inc., Redimix Companies, and Independent Concrete Pumping Corp.,—we are nearing completion of the deep foundations for the future bridge structure. Construction crews have started work on the substructure concrete for the piers and last week, the first pier footing was successfully completed, with a total concrete volume of 700 cubic yards.

Green Line D-Branch: September Update

Coming back to where it all started, the Railroad-SPS JV recently completed a 9-day shutdown on the MBTA Green Line D-Branch in early September. Our crews worked day and night to finish full depth replacement of a #5 and a #6 crossover at Fenway Station, including an additional 200 feet of full depth track replacement outside the turnouts. During the surge, our team also installed 1,400 new timber ties, 2,600 feet of rail, shot 23 thermite welds, and tamped almost 10,000 feet of track structure.

In addition, this surge marked the beginning of our work with Fischbach & Moore Electrical Group to install the MBTA’s new GLTPS system across the Green Line. Their electricians installed 128 new anchor assemblies and around 22,000 ft of new power supply cable, all while working in coordination with the ongoing track repairs.

All work was completed thanks to continued support from the City of Boston, Town of Brookline, and various MBTA Departments.

SPS and Bond Civil & Utility Logan Airport Terminal C Joint Venture Project Recap (Video)

The Bond Civil & Utility – SPS New England Joint Venture is excited to share this video recapping a major milestone at Logan International Airport.

In the fall, the Terminal C Roadways project at Logan International Airport for The Massachusetts Port Authority successfully demolished two structures, installed the final bridge span, and re-opened a new roadway to Terminal C, working around the clock in only nine days.

I-95 and Dedham Street Canton, MA Project Complete

SPS is proud to announce the completion of another project for our valued client at MassDOT in Canton, along I-95 and Dedham St. This $50M project was years in the making and added a new off-ramp from I-95, replaced five bridges, upgraded public utilities, and improved a 1 Mile stretch of roadway.

This monumental task required crews to work seven days a week for months on end to meet the project completion date.

SPS and RCC Green Line Surge Project

SPS forces deployed within the Boston Common to perform repairs to the tunnel roof above the MBTA Boylston Station. The work included on-track shoring of the existing tunnel ceiling in coordination with the overhead power and catenary.

As part of the Green Line Surge project SPS headed up the effort to perform concrete repairs within the MBTA Copley Station.

Crews performed crack injection and leak sealing work along an inaccessible stretch of the isolated MBTA D-Branch and then the busy, confined historical downtown tunnel corridor. SPS continues to respond quickly to the call for transit infrastructure repairs.

SPS and Railroad Construction Company (RCC) crews completed over 2,000 feet of rail and tie replacement. In the station platform pit areas, the team completed concrete and rubber insert installations.

Belden G. Bly Drawbridge Project Achieves Significant Milestone

The Belden G. Bly Drawbridge Project achieved a significant milestone yesterday. The Team performed a successful test opening of the new bridge at around 6:00pm.

Work began on this project in January of 2021. The bascule span erection work was restricted to occur during a USCG Saugus River channel closure between 2/1/24 and 5/15/24. The SPS Team, MassDOT and our Subcontractor partners worked tirelessly to achieve this milestone.

Bass River Bridge Project Completed in Yarmouth, MA

SPS recently completed high priority overhead concrete and pile repairs at the Bass River Bridge in Yarmouth. Tight access, tides, growing repairs, and an expedited repair schedule made this project a challenge for everyone involved. The project started in January and was completed a few days prior to the Fourth of July weekend. It took a huge effort from SPS Superintendents, Foreman, Labor, Operations, Marine Division and Project Management . Mark Rousseau (Site Superintendent) was supported by Joe Harvey, Joe Ford, Nick Terenzoni, Ben Terenzoni, Jimmy Zechello, John Desimone, Jason Williams, Jeremiah Connolly, Chris Pickford, and very determined crew. Congratulations to everyone who made this one a success.

SPS New England, Select Demo Lead Boston Bridge Project

The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority announced that the Dorchester Avenue Bridge in Boston is under construction.

The bridge, which is located between Von Hillern and Kemp streets, was built in 1925 and rehabilitated in 1975. The steel bridge carries vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists over the Red Line, the Commuter Rail Old Colony Lines and the Cabot Yard maintenance tracks.

It is being replaced to protect its structural integrity and ensure reliable service.

Work began on the project in the summer of 2022. The budget for the project is $47,125,079 and is provided by federal formula funds and some MBTA matching funds, according to Lisa Battison, a spokesperson of the MBTA.

The lead contractor on the project is SPS New England of Salisbury, Mass., and Select Demo Services of Salem, N.H., is the demolition contractor.

“Dorchester Avenue over the MBTA Red Line, Cabot Yard Spur and Old Colony Main Line consists of replacement of the existing three-span highway bridge with a new, two-span precast reinforced concrete deck panel slab and cast in place closure pours, sidewalks and barriers, on weathering steel multi-girder superstructure,” according to SPS New England. “A new pile supported abutment will be constructed behind the existing reinforced concrete rigid frame south abutment of the south span, using drilled and driven pipe piles and a reinforced cast-in-place concrete cap.

“A new pile supported pier will be constructed between the existing granite block south abutment of the north span and the reinforced concrete rigid frame north abutment of the middle span, using drilled and driven pipe piles and a reinforced cast-in-place concrete cap,” SPS added. “The existing granite block north abutment of the north span will be reused, and a new precast reinforced concrete cap will be placed on top to support the new superstructure.”

To relocate the existing utilities from the existing Dorchester Avenue bridge, a prefabricated temporary utility bridge will be erected on a reinforced concrete foundation supported by drilled micropiles. Work also includes the rehabilitation of an existing 300-ft. long bin wall by installing soil nails and a reinforced concrete face.
